Why Self-Compassion Matters

Self-compassion isn’t selfish—and it’s definitely not narcissism. In fact, it’s one of the most powerful gifts you can give yourself.

We all know self-compassion matters, but making it a priority can sometimes feel impossible. Midlife adds even more complexity: caring for loved ones, managing personal health challenges, and planning for retirement. No wonder so many of us feel overwhelmed.

So, what does it mean to practice self-compassion? It’s about learning strategies to accept where we are and move forward by making space to embrace life wholeheartedly.

What Self-Compassion Looks Like

  • Extending kindness to ourselves when we struggle or suffer
  • Forgiving ourselves for mistakes
  • Prioritizing our needs and strengths
  • Giving ourselves permission to rest and recharge
  • Setting healthy boundaries
  • Sometimes, putting ourselves first

Why Is It So Hard?

As humans, we’re wired for connection and belonging. For women, nurturing others has deep roots in early societies where creating a safe home was essential. Today, we still care for children, parents, partners, and friends—often at the expense of our own well-being. For men, the pressure to provide food and security would have been enormous and the pressure to provide still carries through today.

We easily extend compassion to others, yet struggle to give it to ourselves. Why?

  • Fear of being selfish
  • Internalized societal messages
  • Childhood wounds or trauma
  • Or simply never making time for ourselves

Pause and Reflect

Take a moment today to find a quiet space and gently ask:

Where does a lack of self-compassion show up for me?

It might look like:

  • Criticizing your body
  • Using unhealthy coping strategies (alcohol, drugs, restrictive dieting)
  • Comparing yourself endlessly on social media
  • Staying in draining relationships
  • Chasing external validation
  • Perfectionism

When we seek external sources to fill us, we often end up feeling emptier inside. Awareness is the first step—and it can be challenging. So please, be kind to yourself as you begin a process of finding self-compassion.
